Right now in the United States, over two million people sit in a prison or jail cell, while over seven million are under some form of correctional supervision. The U.S. alone incarcerates over 25% of the world’s prison population. As the system called the prison industrial complex keeps growing into a massive for-profit net of social control, more and more people are organizing as prison abolitionists, believing that this system can’t be reformed—it must be abolished.

How does the prison industrial complex affect our communities, and what’s being done locally to resist it?

Featuring speakers from the Women’s Prison Book Project, the Cece McDonald Support Committee, and others in the struggle against prisons and policing. Come to learn from local activists, ask questions and share your experience!

Slutwalk Minneapolis are hosting another Open Mic event at the  Minnehaha Free Space.

This is an event for survivors and their supporters to participate in however they feel comfortable: free verse, story telling, or music.

This is a safe place for everyone. Anyone not respecting the participants or audience will be asked to leave.

Minnehaha Free Space is an alcohol free place; you are welcome to bring something to drink that is alcohol free and perhaps a snack to share.

Remember that you are NOT to blame and it wasn’t your fault. We believe you and we are here to listen and support you.

Icarus Project – Support Group Meeting

The Icarus group is a radical mental health collective interested in sharing experiences of navigating ‘dangerous gifts’, commonly bound down by medical definitions as ‘illness’.  Though building community and openly discussing mental health in a personal way, we help inspire, support and strengthen each other.  The core of the group is a regularly meeting support group, which is an open safe space.  Additionally, we hope to reach out to folks through activism, art and other projects to help expand the discussion of what mental health is in a world gone mad.

Public speaking can be an empowering and fun opportunity to express yourself, and it’s an especially important skill when presenting progressive or radical ideas. This workshop incorporates games and on-your-feet activities in order to give participants an interactive learning experience and the opportunity to “do” public speaking. The workshop is designed for individuals who wish to express radical ideas in spaces where this can often be scary or difficult.

This workshop will cover the following topics:

• Speaking Your Truth
• Finding Your Center
• Organizing Your Thoughts
• Expressing Your Style

The trainer for this workshop will be Autumn Brown.  Autumn is a founding member of the Rock Dove Collective, a radical community health exchange, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Common Fire Foundation. She trains activists, organizers and groups in Consensus Process, Facilitation, Resisting Racism, organizational and strategic development, and many other skills.  She has taught and presented in many places nationally and internationally, including with the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, Bard College and WE ACT for Environmental Justice, among many others.  Autumn lives in St. Cloud, MN with her partner and two children.

We are looking for performers of all orientations to perform and to lend their bodies and skills for WSC, taking place in March at the Bryant Lake Bowl.  We are contacting you because you’re creative, you’re sexy, you’re a bicyclist!  If you are interested in learning more, please come to our community round table discussion, “Chain of Thought” on Tuesday, Jan 10th 5 – 7p

Our diverse ensemble will use elements of burlesque, comedy, dance and live music to construct a cabaret with a bicycle theme. Do you have an idea and want to share it? Totally cool. Don’t have an idea? We can help you create, develop, and finesse a short performance piece, at any stage of creation!

2. Get in Gear, open workshop for prospective artists to improvise ideas. Sat, Jan 14th 11am – 1pm

All events will be at the Minnehaha Free Space.

Rehearsals will be scheduled throughout February, and a small tech in March before our first production.

WSC final performances are at the Bryant Lake Bowl on March 1st, 8th, and 9th at 10:00pm.

About the Film:
In economically turbulent times, rent and home-ownership have become unaffordable at best and impossible at worst. Thus, people all over the world continue a long tradition of reclaiming this basic human right by squatting. Shelter: A Squatumentary is a documentary film that explores the squatting movement in the East Bay from 2004 to 2007. We follow three examples of the struggle for housing in an unaffordable market such as that of the San Francisco Bay Area. Hellarity House, Banana House, and Power Machine are stories of squatters who have found one tentative solution to the ongoing housing crisis.
