Insurgent Theatre/Lucasville Prison Uprising Workshop

ImageWorkshop: Thursday, April 19th, 4-6pm at the Free Space

Insurgent Theatre and RedBird Prison Abolition (based in Columbus, OH) are coming to Minneapolis on April 18th and 19th, performing a play called IN THE BELLY and presenting a workshop on the Lucasville Uprising. IN THE BELLY depicts long term solitary confinement inorder to begin a critique of the entire US prison system. This collaboratively developed workshop piece draws from many prisoner accounts, audience feedback and close study of history, including ideas from Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish.

In April of 1993, hundreds of prisoners at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville occupied a cell block for 11 days. RedBird Prison Abolition has developed a workshop about this event and it’s consequences in cooperation with survivors of the uprising, some of whom have been on death row in Ohio’s super-max prison for almost two decades.
